It was also very surprising to me that what I experienced as a norm for child care in Manitoba was not necessarily practiced in another province. It became my mission to start a child care centre that focused on quality and included a home like environment for all the families, children and staff. After more than a decade at SEEDS, that belief still shapes the way I approach each day. Children are not simply learners to me , they are thinkers, creators, question-askers, idea-makers, and meaningful contributors to the communities they are part of. As Director at Dr. Freda Miller, one of my greatest joys is helping create a place where children feel known and valued, educators love what they do, and families feel that they truly belong. At DFM, a small idea rarely stays small for long. A child’s question can become an investigation. A conversation between educators can spark a new experience. A simple project can grow as children revisit it, change it, challenge it, and make it their own. We love asking, “Where could this go next?” and often, the children take us somewhere we never expected. That same spirit comes alive in the traditions we create together. Our Winter Celebration and child-led Flea Market, for example, have grown into opportunities for children, educators, and families to create, share, contribute, and give back together. For me, these moments are about much more than an event. They are about children discovering that their ideas can matter to others and that they are already meaningful members of a community. What makes DFM especially meaningful to me is the people I get to work alongside every day. We are a deeply connected and collaborative team of educators who genuinely enjoy being together and creating together. We share ideas, build on one another’s strengths, laugh a lot, learn from one another, and find real joy in watching something wonderful take shape with the children. I believe that when educators feel trusted, valued, and excited to come together, children feel that energy too. That is what excellence means to me. It is not perfection, and it is not about making every experience bigger. It is the care and intention we bring to everyday moments, the relationships we nurture, and the curiosity to keep discovering what else might be possible. Even after all these years, I am still learning alongside the children and the people around me. And perhaps that is what I love most about this work: we never quite know where a child’s idea will take us next.
