ALTADORE SCHOOL - 4406 16th St., SW

We operate this program at Altadore School in the gymnasium and on the stage.  We are licensed for 60 out of School Care children.  We offer care before/after school, early dismissals and most PD days.  We lease from Calgary Board of Education and part of the lease agreement is that we don't operate during December break , July and August.

Our business hours are 7:00am - 8:30am and 3:20pm - 6:00 pm Monday - Thursday and Friday from 7:00am - 8:30am and 12:15pm - 6:00pm.  On full days we are open from 7:00am - 6:00 pm.

This type of program is in the form of a roll away where we set up and take down daily.  Staff are innovative and creative when they set up this program into learning centres such as; art, library, block/building, dramatic, manipulative, games and large motor areas.  Our goal is to make it as home like as possible and to be reflective of the children who are attending.  Children are given ample opportunities to demonstrate leadership skills and are supported in a child lead atmosphere where learning takes place based on their interests.

If you have any questions about this location or would like to register please feel free to call.

Raisa Toth - Program Coordinator

Hello, my name is Raisa! I have been working at Seeds of S.P.I.C.E since October 2020 and have been at Altadore School the whole time. On my spare time, I love to create, 3D print and play D&D. Before taking courses in childcare, I did complete my diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology at SAIT. It’s been amazing working at Seeds and can’t wait to explore as being the Program Coordinator!

Science: The children are provided supplies to create and explore. They can observe and communicate with other children in the program to see what each have done to help them decide whether to make changes to their experiments or keep them the same. These activities provide opportunities for the children to build relationships with one another and provide the children with problem solving abilities. These activities will allow us to build and expand our experiments based on the children’s interest to more complex projects.

Art: Art can be created with simple supplies such as markers, pencils and paper but it can also be expanded into activities such as drawing based on the children’s perception and using natural materials like leaves, branches and dirt to create their art. This month the children were tracing and painting with the natural materials, as well as drawing out their own perception of plants, flowers, and trees in the community garden.

Outdoor Exploration: Outdoor exploration is a great way for the children to stay in tune with what nature has to offer. We had trees available for the children to climb and to test their risk management skills were, sand, dirt and rocks for the children to explore and create different structures.  As well as insects that allow some children to resist the fear of such as bees and learn why it does what it does but also to see the beauty that it creates.

Sports: Hockey, soccer, volleyball and so much more. Physical activity allows the children to stay in tune with their bodies. Creating new games or sharing old games with new friends. Revenge tag is an extremely popular game with all the children, providing the opportunity to involve all the children within the school walls. While on a field trip the children learned of a volleyball court with sand.  It started with children playing their own games and then turned into a volley ball match with teams. The volleyball game allowed the older children to show the younger the rules of the game also allowing them to work on team building skills.

Community Engagement: Having a community garden was so much fun for all. Whether it be at the beginning of the month picking vegetables out of the Seeds of S.P.I.C.E Community Garden, to watering it daily, to harvesting the garden for the colder months. The children were able to take home and taste the fruits of their labor. We have to say, yummy!

Friendships: Coming into a new center is hard, especially walking into a new school or new program. We try to help the children engage and build relationships with new and old friends.
